Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible
By Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.

READ IT!

There is hope for the Catholic Church! That is so awsome!

This is nothing new. Any Catholic who knows thier faith well enough (many don't) knows that parts of the Bible aren't true, for instance the Book of Tobit and Judith are both religious novels written by unknown authors.

This doesn't mean that such writings are not uninspired writings. All writings in the Bible are still God's Word, whether the events it contained are factual or not.

The fact that they'recomeing out and saying 'You cannot interprate this literatly' and being 'Dude, no, you're wrong' to the Fundimentalists is new. As is the fact that there is now an offical document saying this stuff.

Individual Catholics and even parishes, know this is nothing new. To the Catholic church as an instiution, it's a incredible step.

I know a goo dmany Catholic friends who will be happy that the church finaly made this annoucement. :)

Ah yes, well as far as literal interpretation goes, that's always been a huge "no no" in the Church. I suppose that it IS a big step if it's made in relation to the denominations. Pardon my bluntness, but the Fundies has always pissed me off a bit.

This bit has to be Benedict's doing. He's pretty hard line and now it's showing. I like him even more now!

I think the fundies tick every one off, even other fundies. >

Jack Chick especially. He ticks EVERYONE off. He's good for a laugh though.

That's not new news at all for any person who's really a Catholic. :P

It's news to those fundy twit heads who think they ARE Catholic who give all Cathlics a bad name. It's a good step in trying to repair their outward image, and it's very nice to have put out in writing. Most "good" Catholics will probally have your reaction of 'Um.. duh?' but 90% of people are sheep. THey hear 'THis is the word of god!' and think that they can either use it as an excuse, think it's literal (not knowing that it's a translation of a translation of a translieration of a ect ect ect) or what not. It's also a wonderful shot at fundies and finaly seeks to sepearate the extremists from the sensible. It takes away the excuse of those who use the bible to justify anti-semitism and sexism. Kinda also puts those twits who want Creation taught as science on very poor footing.

Yes, it's a 'well duh' common sence document. But heck, when do you hear of any organized ANYTHING putting out one of those? :)

[identity profile] edmondia.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, most fundies ain't Catholic-based anyway. :/

Personally, I always thought Creation-as-science was a hilarious idea. Because apparently the world was created twice. And Adam and Eve had two kids, one of whom killed the other, and then went on and married some chick. Now, where did that other chick come from...? XD

[identity profile] franthenut.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe. Yeah, that always is a problem, eh? ;) Perhaps the chick was from Lilith? But where did she find a dude to knock up, unless she got pregant by Adam before hand? And does that mean we're all in insestuous reliationships no matter who we're with? :)

And I have met many fundie-Catholics. They go to a Cathoilic church, go to mass, and beleive that the bible is to be translated literatly. They're scary SOBS who give all Catholics bad names (as if the organzational structure of the religion didn't do that already. -_-)

It's just very nice to see the structure of the largest body of Christians acklowlage that you cannot take all this stuff literaly. It's a hell of a big step to have that in writing.

[identity profile] edmondia.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
But Lilith isn't mentioned in the Bible! So how could whatsisface marry her daughter?

*snicker*

...if they believe that, they're not really Catholic. I mean, you're generally allowed to call yourself Catholic as long as you hang on to basic dogma, but, er, the not-taking-it-literally bit IS basic dogma. That's why we've got all those theologians who are saints and such.

[identity profile] franthenut.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You expect logic from this sort though? :)

Alot of people seem to think all Christianity is Catholism anyway, so... -_-

Ya know, it would be nice to get a compatative religions class be offered in schools so people could have more of a bloody clue about things. Most people don't even know much at all about their own religion, never the mind anyone elses.

[identity profile] edmondia.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You do have a point there. XD

...riiiiiiight. Do people not, like, look around? I mean, sheesh, I can name about ten churches in my hometown and here that are decidedly NOT Catholic.

That would be nice, but it would have to be an elective, and nobody would willingly take a class like that. X_x;;

[identity profile] klebkat.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, I don't know about that. I mean, I know the Bible's been tampered with left and right, but some of the things in the "Untrue" part I HAVE read it the Bible.

Do be honest, how do they know what's true and not? There just human.

[identity profile] andy16666.livejournal.com 2005-10-07 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I must admit that this is a welcome change for me too. I used to be a devout Christian for a long time, and many of these passages were constantly getting between people, and confusing argument. It's about time for a revision.

I don't understand how people think that it's a good thing to have faith in something that's false.

Why should we call something perfect if it's from a liar?
