In defence of FF.net

Just because I wrote up a big ole thing on a mailing list and felt the need to post it around.

The problem is that FF.net doesn't have the resources to do what it tries. I belive almost all deletions are done near automatically if they are in certain categories. I know plenty of people who have had fics deleted for insane reasons. Full prose fics deleted for being script, PG rated being removed for not being rated properly, ect.

90% of the time I think things are reported and deleted because someone had an 'OMG' reaction to the fic or the author left a critical review on their fic. Sadly, because of all the twitty little OMG LOL types, FF.net has become an utter cesspool where 12 year old girls write about gay sex and rape and other things they know nothing about cause all the other 12 year old girls want to read it. They don't care about characterization, they care about putting out something that they can get praise for.

I belive the increasing rules on FF.net are an attempt to reverse that trend but it's coming too late and there's not enough time or staff to truly enforce anything. The other half is that there are outside pressures. Parents don't want to accept responsibility for what their child looks at online so 'OMG, my precious little baby saw GAY PORN on your site!!!!! I SUE YOU!' never the mind her precious little baby is writing the gay erotica she's so appalled at. The Internet obviously corrupted her. Hence the NC-17 ban. Chose your owns are not a format that FF.net is designed to handle. It's a format that's chaotic at best, and best done on a webpage. Hence the ban on that. The RCAA has been a real hard ass on everyone online's ass about copyright infringement and tossing lawsuits out left and right and seems to have congress paid off so that they can get away with any thing they want. FF.net already got a cease and desist order from the Motion Picture Association for using the standard G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17 ratings. Banning songfics is probably FF.net's way of covering their own ass to keep from being sued.

And that was a big long ramble. @_@ In sum: FF.net's motto = 'Better safe then sued' and 'We don;t have the time or money to properly enforce this all so we'll trust those reporting to be fair.'

^^

Alleluia!!

Bout time someone ranted about FF.net. *kicks FF.net*

I had six baby ass people kick me off. I went and checked out one of my harassers bio’s and turns out she was bragging about throwing me off. She got Shardy too, because Shardy stood up for me against their 1 page and a half flames. -_-;; children….

What’s funnier about that situation, they were all RELATED. What the hell is that about?

FF.net needs moderators.

I mean, look how many people use FF.net. If just a hundred of them would voluenteer to read over the reports for free-- and people would, I bet-- things would be so much better.

If I had more time and the programming skills, I'd start my own fully moderated archive. But I'm too busy...
