I recommend After Effects. It may seem daunting at first, but it is a truly amazing program. And you can even import files/folders directly into After Effects from Photoshop.
Final Cut Pro is also a good choice, much better than Premiere.
After Effects is a very professional program, also quite pricey. (If you have to pay retail; I got mine off a friend so…) It's for PC and Mac. Pricewise for the latest version is $699.99 for standard and $999.99 for pro. I don't know how much it would cost for earlier versions.
It's pretty much integrated with most of the software Adobe has put out. You can make multiple compositions in one timeline (like for different effects or layers) that can be combined in one composition. Modes and other effects available in Photoshop are also in After Effects. Also keyframe animation to move things around. The learning curve isn't so bad if you're familiar with using editing software and Photoshop.
Final Cut Pro is just for Mac. The newest is Final Cut Pro HD, and that's really hardcore. Final Cut 3 is actually good for being an earlier program. While Final Cut 4 has more features, it's extremely buggy.
When we were training up in video editing, we learned Premiere and Final Cut side-by-side. In Final Cut it is much easier to capture clips and pretty good about previewing anything you've done.
There's also Vegas Video, and that's just for PC. I haven't used this as much as the other programs, but it's very good if you want to combine video and audio. It's also very intuitive to use.
*blinks* Of course it all depends on what type of video editing you plan on doing. If you just want to do normal editing look into Vegas or Final Cut.
Have a PC and mostly looking into still I can do m'music videos and clips on and such. Have Virtual Dub for combining video and audio [only it does't have a preview/test thing, so you cna't tell if you hav eit all cued up right.]
I'll have to foward the list along and see what he can find on his discount.
