Bit from Minderfal
Again, opinions are good
Kaiyn ushered out her last customer, then gave a large sigh of relief. Some times she wondered if she might be better off without her magic talent. Many people came to see her, or to beg a spell from 'the most powerful young magic user in the land'. When she was three, she had shocked her mother by levitating a cookie from the high shelf into her hand. Soon afterwards, she was the sensation the land over. Her mother didn't mind, every visitor to the house would leave a gift or sorts, and it helped her family out greatly. She was apprenticed at the age of 7 to a master magician, but found out that her talent wasn't conventional magic, and couldn't teach her. This only heightened her popularity. Her father died when she was nine, and her mother passed one when Kaiyn was seventeen. Kaiyn decided to move away and set up her practice when no one had heard of her, but word spread fast. Soon she was getting hundreds of visitors and customers. She tried moving again, but the crowd always found her. She finally gave in, and set up shop in a small town at the edge of the land. The towns people didn't mind, they were grateful. Now the inns were always filled by people seeking Kaiyn's advice, or spells, the herb shops had good business, and the town prospered.
It had been a year since her mother's death, and Kaiyn was starting to become worried. Her talent, unpredictable as always, had been 'leading' her to situations. A month ago, she had felt magical vibrations in an abandoned building that was to be knocked down to make a new one. Upon checking it out, she had found a child, thought to have been a runaway, locked inside one of the rooms. Upon investigation, the girl stated that her father had locked her there, and had been abusing her. The town had awarded Kaiyn a metal of honor for rescuing the girl, and the girls mother had given Kaiyn a charm that had been in her family for generations, but Kaiyn had been worried. There was nothing magical about the situation, and when she reexamined the building, she felt nothing.
A knock on the door rousted Kaiyn from her brooding. She was thinking on ignoring it, but her talent sent her a feeling of urgency, indicating she definitely should answer the door.
Giving a sigh of exasperation, she hauled herself from her chair and answered the door. A tall, dark haired man stood there, eyes looking straight ahead. "Yes?" Kaiyn asked.
"Minderfall bids you to come." The man stated, flatly.
Kaiyn gave a mental sigh. Great, just what she needed. If it hadn't have been for her talents urging, she would have shut the door and gone to bed. "Who is Minderfall?" She asked.
"Minderfall bids to you come." he repeated, almost in a monotone.
My, isn't he bright, she thought, sarcastically. "I'm sorry, could you come back tomorrow? It's been a long day." She told him.
"Minderfall bids you to come."
"Yes, I heard you the first time, but I'm not going anywhere at this moment. Please leave." She stated firmly. Why on earth did her talent want her to talk to this man!
"Minderfall bids you to come." He repeated once more, then with a swift motion, flung a power into her face.
Kaiyn instinctively shot out the counter-spell, but found that instead of blocking the spell, it was enhancing it! Her last thought before passing out was the her talent had betrayed her.
She came to, her head pounding. She reflexively cast a small healing spell to quell her dizziness, the looked at her surroundings. The room was small, with a dirt floor. Mistake number one, Kaiyn smiled, then touching her hand to the floor tapped into the powers of the earth. Her smile widened, as she harnessed the power and began constructing a telaportation spell to take her back home. She invoked it, then waited. Nothing. She tried making the door dissolve. Nothing. No spell the would release her from the room would work. On a hunch, she congered a small stone. It materialized into the air, and fell to the floor with a plink. It was as she had thought, her talent wanted her to be here, and until it changed it's mind, she was stuck.
Giving a sigh, she got up, and banged on the door. "Any one out there!" She called.
"Yes." Came the monotone reply. "Are you awake?"
'Am I awake?' Kaiyn mentally repeated in amazement. "Yes I'm awake!" She retorted.
"Then I must get Minderfall." Came the reply. Footsteps began, then trailed down the hall.
Well that went well, Kaiyn mused. Now that she thought of it, she could have used her magic to force the guard to open the door, but knowing her magic, it probably wouldn't have let her do that anyway. Soon the footsteps returned, accompanied by a heavier tread of feet. The door opened, and a plump older woman entered the room, closing the door behind her. Clearing her throat, she began to speak.
"I am Minderfall. I have brought you here to offer an invitation to join me in my quest for world dominance." She proclaimed, haughtily.
Oh-boy. Kaiyn thought. "Why?" She replied.
The woman appeared taken back. "Why? What do you mean, 'Why?'" She looked at Kaiyn as if she had grown a third arm.
"I mean exactly what I said. Why? Why conquer the world? What would we do with it?" Kaiyn replied.
"For the glory of it! For the power!" Minderfall proclaimed.
Because it's there, Kaiyn mentally added. "And why would I want the glory or power? I have enough power as it is!"
"But I don't!" Minderfall exclaimed. "With your power and magic, I could rule the world!"
"But you have magic," Kaiyn stated, it oozed all over the woman, like a slimy green goo. Clearly not a magic used for good!
"But it is not enough! I require a greater power to assist me!"
"No." Kaiyn stated, flatly.
The woman was again taken back. "No?" She repeated, unbelievingly.
"No. I don't want to rule the world, I don't want fame or glory, and as for power, I have more then I'll ever need!" Kaiyn explained.
The woman's face twisted into an expression of disgust. "So." She stated. "We shall see if you will change your mind." She whirled, then rapped on the door three time. "Open!" She shouted. The door was pulled open, and Minderfall stomped out.
Again Kaiyn attempted to teleport back home. Nothing. She was still being held back. Giving a sigh, she sat down and waited.
