Shin took a deep breath and opened the diary, gently turning the pages as if they were made of rice paper. He paused, smiling sadly at one entry from when they were both ten. Kosei's messy hand writing told of a family trip to a large park. Shin sighed wistfully, recalling his own memories along side Kosei's transcribed ones. Then he froze, eyes widening.
'There was this large pit in the woods near where we were,' Kosei's hand wrote. 'It looked almost like a grave, waiting to be filled. There was even a large pile of dirt near by. He fit in it perfectly, didn't even wake up. I put in a few handfuls of dirt, but it would have taken too long. If I would have had a shovel I could have burred him before he even woke up.'
Shin stared at the page in shock, face dead pale. Shakily, he flipped to a new page.
'It's really amazing how deeply he sleeps. I must have pinched him 50 times, even dug my nails in there good and got him to bleed some. Took until I started poking at him with pins before he reacted. Got at least 3 in before I had to pull them out again. I really should look into acupuncture.'
Numbly, Shin continued reading, unable to stop, flipping to another random page.
'Why can't I protect him?' The script was cleaner, from when they were in middle school. 'Why can't I stop whatever is messing up his head? He looks so small... so much like a child... my baby brother who's older then me... I'll probably wind up finishing his homework for him again. He fell asleep in the middle of his math book. Not that I blame him.... He's loosing weight again. Mom says if he looses anymore he'll have to go to the hospital. I made some brownies, but they didn't come out very good. I'll make him eat one anyway.'
Shin continued flipping, reading entries that alternated from the sister he though he knew, to one who seemed dedicated to hurting him.
'I hate him!' one railed. 'I hope he never wakes up!' Another gleefully described how she had slowly strangled him in his sleep until his face had started turning blue, then let go and did it again.
'It's like he's my prom date.'
Shin swallowed, recognizing the date as that of the prom he had been in a coma for.
'The constant beep of the machines is like a waltz of sorts. He's so pale... I'm also afraid to touch him, it's like he'll dissolve if I do, and the shadows will come back and make me take his place. They're watching... the shadows. They know what I did. But I didn't mean for this to happen.'
Shin exhaled in mild relief, but it caught in his throat as he continued reading.
'Not now. He hasn't suffered enough to die.'
He wanted to throw the diary away but forced himself to finish reading.
'He hasn't paid me back for everything, but the shadows won't let me extract it from his flesh anymore. But he'll do what I tell him to. His soul is mine as forfeit for all the pain he's caused, and I'll slowly tear it to shreds and tear out his heart as he has mine."
